COLUMBIA - The city council passed phase one of a two part project that proposes changes on Providence Road. The street improvements on Providence Road, from Turner Avenue to Stadium Boulevard, include reconfiguration and constrution of signalized intersections in order to manage the heavy traffic flow on Providence during rush hour. It also includes the construction of a new residential street in the Grasslands Subdivision between Bingham Road and Burnam Road that would be wider to accomodate more traffic.
The council has been discussing these changes over the past 11 years. Even though it passed the proposal at Monday's meeting, the Columbia Historic Preservation Commission is opposed to the decision. That's because eight historical homes would be demolished for the project to move forward.
