City Council to Discuss College Avenue Safety Project Tonight
COLUMBIA - The city of Columbia will choose one of two options for the College Avenue Safety Enhancement Project, or CASE, at Monday night's City Council meeting.
There are two primary options, both involving a barrier and two new crosswalks.
- Low concrete wall with a short fence on top
- Full-height metal fence with "stone look" columns
The Missouri Department of Transportation will fund the project with a grant of more than $650,000. The city of Columbia and MU will split the remaining cost, if necessary.
Columbia Public Works said that approximately 2,500 students illegally cross College Avenue every day and that 19,000 cars drive on the street. There have been 20 accidents on College Avenue involving pedestrians and motorists since 2005.
