City Council to Vote on Truck Ban
COLUMBIA - The City Council will vote on an ordinance Monday night to ban trucks on Rock Quarry Road between Grindstone Parkway and Stadium Boulevard. The city is considering banning trucks with more than four axles. The city recently conducted a traffic study on the area and found that less than one percent of traffic fell into the banned truck category.
More than ninety-two percent of the traffic on that stretch of road consisted of passenger cars.
Some staff members are not recommending the truck ban because they say those trucks will have to take different routes that pass through the already congested intersections of Stadium and Providence, Stadium and Old Highway 63, and Nifong and Providence.
City Council member Gary Kespohl said the ban was suggested because that stretch of Rock Quarry Road is very narrow.
"It's real narrow black top through there and it has some added on shoulder that is black-top but I can see five axle trucks having trouble making some of those turns in there," Kespohl said.
If the ban does pass it will affect city vehicles but will not affect emergency vehicles.
