City Seeks Answers About Downtown Apartments
COLUMBIA - City officials and downtown residents will continue discussion of downtown zoning at a meeting Thursday night.
The hearing follows several similar meetings this week addressing new student housing at College and Walnut. The development of new student apartments was approved in early 2011. But since then, the Odle family who owns the property, has changed some of their plans, and city officials aren't pleased.
The initial plans included 5,000 square feet of commercial property, 100 apartments, and 200 parking spaces. Now, plans include a much larger parking structure that neighboring residents and city officials say poses traffic and bike safety concerns. The addition of more parking also cuts into the city's plans to create new parking, specifically to accommodate these new downtown residents.
The meeting Thursday beings at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
