Civil War Archives Online
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - The Missouri State Archives has made documents from four Civil War-era governors available for viewing online. The documents come from governors Claiborne Fox Jackson, Hamilton Rowan Gamble, Willard Preble Hall and Thomas Clement Fletcher.
The four headed Missouri's government at different points from 1861 through 1865. The Secretary of State's office says the documents contain information about Missouri's decision to stay in the Union and its emancipation of some slaves.
The office says the papers will help researchers study war-time actions of the state's government. Archive staff members are now preparing to post documents from Missouri's governors in the post-war Reconstruction period.
