Claire McCaskill Top Nominee for Republicans
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Sen Claire McCaskill has been a top priority of Missouri Republicans since she was elected in 2006.
But more than a year before voters select a nominee, the GOP is facing a crowded primary. That could leave the eventual nominee worn down with less cash by the time the general election campaign starts. Instead of one standard bearer taking the fight to McCaskill, the party has three potential candidates. Former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman and Rep. Todd Akin have both entered the race, and St. Louis businessman John Brunner is considering a run.
Democrats say that's just how they want it. Jackson County Democratic Chairman Steve Bough says Democrats are gleeful. But Republican Party Executive Director Lloyd Smith says the GOP will be competitive no matter who the nominee is.
