KANSAS CITY (AP) - One St. Louis-area congressman is moving on in his bid for higher office, while another incumbent from the city prepares to leave Washington.
Todd Akin won Tuesday's Republican primary for U.S. Senate by defeating former Missouri treasurer Sarah Steelman and businessman John Brunner. Akin faces incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in the November general election.
In the Democratic primary for Missouri's 1st Congressional District, Russ Carnahan lost to William Lacy Clay Jr., another U.S. House of Representatives member from St. Louis.
The two Democrats had to square off since Missouri's Republican-led Legislature eliminated Carnahan's former 3rd District. The state lost one of its nine congressional districts after the 2010 Census.
Missouri voters also endorsed a state constitutional amendment that explicitly allows public prayer.
