Clergy Deliver Letter Condemning Akin Comments
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A group of St. Louis-area religious leaders have delivered a letter to the office of U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, condemning the Missouri Republican's comments that liberalism
"really is a hatred for God."
The clergy members delivered the statement Wednesday morning to Akin's office in Ballwin. Aide Steve Taylor said Akin had commitments elsewhere in the 2nd District, was never informed by the clergy of their planned visit, and was unable to change his schedule to meet with them. Taylor said he offered to meet, but the clergy declined. Only a retired pastor and two non-clergy constituents met with Taylor.
Akin, who is running for U.S. Senate in 2012, apologized Tuesday for the comments made last week in a radio interview sponsored by the conservative Family Research Council.
