CMU's Bazner Hits Walkoff, Splits with Mt. Marty
FAYETTE, MO -- Steve Bazner hit a bases loaded bloop single in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game of a doubleheader to spark the Central Methodist baseball team to its first win of the season Saturday at Estes Field. The Eagles (1-3) split two games with Mount Marty.
The Lancers (3-1) won the first game 3-2. The Eagles won the second contest 4-3.
In the first game, Mount Marty scored the first three runs with one in the second inning and two in the third. Allen Hemeyer scored on a RBI single for the first run. Hemeyer and Mathias Godsil had RBIs in the third inning.
Central Methodist cut the deficit to one run in the fourth inning. Brennen Wood doubled to left field, plating James Vega and Neil DeMartin. Wood later advanced to third base on a passed ball, and Alfredo Souffront drew a walk in the next at-bat, but a flyout to right field ended the threat.
Dominic Wieseler (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing two earned runs on four hits over four innings. Jason Schmidt recorded his second save of the season with one inning of shutout ball.
Drew Greiwe (0-1) took the loss but gave a strong pitching performance, allowing three earned runs on four hits in three innings. He struck out five batters.
The Lancers took a 3-0 lead in the second game with one run in the first inning and two in the third, highlighted by Jason Schmidt's solo shot to right field for the first run of the contest. The Eagles rallied to tie with three runs in the sixth inning before Bazner's walkoff in the seventh.
"We got solid pitching today and very good defense," Central Methodist Head Coach Fred Smith stated. "We simply told our guys not to panic and that the hits would start coming soon. Late in the second game, we put some hits together."
Vega hit a two-run single to left field to trim the difference to one run, 3-2. Bazner and DeMartin scored on the play. Wood singled to right center in the next at-bat, bringing home Dustin Ray to knot the game.
Matt Gessner led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single. Four batters later, Bazner took the first pitch of the at-bat to shallow left center, scoring Gessner from third base.
Tyler Paule (1-0) earned the victory with four innings of shutout baseball out of the bullpen. Travis Tompson started the game but took a no decision, pitching three innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits.
Adam McVay (0-1) dropped the game, giving up one earned run on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Central Methodist hosts Mount Marty on Sunday for another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
