UPDATE: Suspect accused of having pipe bombs identified
COLE COUNTY - The Cole County Prosecutor's Office filed charges Wednesday against a man suspected of having pipe bombs and drug paraphernalia.
Deputies arrested Charles McBrearety, 39, after a traffic stop on Heritage Highway Tuesday night. McBrearety has been charged with possession of an illegal weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to court documents, a deputy saw McBrearety backing out of a driveway at high speed, nearly hitting the deputy's car. The deputy stopped McBrearety further down the road, and reported finding two two pipe bombs and drug paraphernalia in the car.
McBrearety reportedly said he intended to use the bombs at the racetrack where he works, though he didn't say why.
Deputies also searched McBrearety's home, finding two more pipe bombs, 36 feet of detonation cord, and more drug paraphernalia. They arrested the person on suspicion of possession of an explosive weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia and careless driving.
The probable cause statement said McBrearety has a history of "narcotics related charges, traffic offenses, forgery and theft."
The Cole County Sheriff's Department is working with the FBI, ATF and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad in the investigation.
