Cole County woman appears in court after drugs found at daycare
JEFFERSON CITY - A Cole County woman charged after children were found playing with drugs at a daycare appeared in court via video Wednesday.
18-year-old Abigail Connell is charged with possession of a controlled substance and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child involving drugs.
She applied for a public defender, but told the judge she wants to hire a private attorney. Judge Thomas Sodergren told Connell she has one week to hire an attorney, or he will appoint a public defender.
Cole County Sheriff's deputies arrested Connell last Saturday, after her mother told authorities she found a plastic bag with drugs at her house. Court documents show the drugs tested positive for methamphetamine. Documents show Connell told authorities the bag of drugs belonged to her.
Connell's mother, Shelley Richter, runs the daycare out of the house where the drugs were found.
Richter was found guilty of child endangerment in a shaken baby case in 2013 and then was granted a retrial. After a retrial, Richter was again found guilty in December of 2014.
Connell will appear in court again next Wednesday at 1:30.
