COLUMBIA — Columbia authorities responded to a suspected armed robbery early Saturday morning at 1718 Providence Rd. North.

The Columbia Police Department stated in a press release that a male suspect knocked on the locked door of America's Best Value Motel. The clerk let him in, not knowing that the suspect would soon display a hand gun.

Officials said the suspect, who was covering his face with a scarf, demanded money as he presented the gun. The clerk escaped out of a side door and hid in a different location. The clerk then called 911.

Officers reported the suspect missing when they arrived at the scene. The man did not take any money, but the report stated a laptop computer was missing from the scene.

A K-9 unit assisted but was unsuccessful at tracking the suspect.
