COLUMBIA - The Columbia College men's basketball team pumps up the volume before every game. And new team manager Rick Mckinley is bringing a new tune to the team.

"He's more involved than any other team manager. Usually nobody is involved and cares too much. He cares and wants us to win," said junior guard Trae Hall.

The team calls him Rick Ross.

"I like it. It's better than some of the nicknames I've had before," said team manager Rick McKinley.

Head Coach Bob Burchard likes the team giving him a nickname as well.

Burchard said, "I've got to imagine that if they start labeling you with a nickname then you're part of the group."

Rick does more than getting players a drink of water. He makes them laugh.

"Sometimes we pass the ball to him a little quick. He's a little slow on that because he's not a basketball player, but that's one funny thing about him," said Hall.

Rick hopes one day he can beat one of the players in a game of horse.

"You never know, maybe I'll get my shot down good enough so I can," remarked McKinley.

But the players disagree.

"No, not even close," said junior forward Mikel Fields.

Right now Rick is filling his role in many ways.

"I don't think you can put all of them in writing, to be honest with you. It's a little bit of everything," said coach Burchard.

The coach and players hope Rick continues to bring the funk the radio can't provide. Coach Burchard says he has tried recruiting team managers before and Rick is one of the better one's he has had.
