COLUMBIA-  City officials are considering making the biggest change to Columbia trash collection in nearly 40 years.  The trash bags that residents currently place near the edge of roadways could be replaced by rolling bins similar to ones seen in Fulton and Jefferson City.

In a poll of about 2,000 residents last August, Columbia Solid Waste found that some people were unhappy with the repeated occurrence of animals tearing the unprotected bags. Columbia Public Works discussed the possible change Monday.

Columbia spends nearly $350,000 a year supplying its residents with trash bags.  Officials hope a change to the permanent rolling bins would eliminate that cost and save the city money in the long run.
