Columbia Council Considers Buying Documents
The Columbia native was blind but became a pioneer in ragtime music after the Civil War. Boone was born in 1864 near Miami, in north-central Missouri. His father was in the Union Army and his mother was a runaway slave. He lost his sight as an infant, and his family sent him to the Missouri School for the Blind in St. Louis. Boone gave his first piano concert in Columbia at the age of 15. A collector is offering to sell correspondence to Boone from his manager along with sheet music and a 1912 recording contract that Boone signed with an "X" - his mark.
