Columbia Downtown District May Expand
University of Missouri student Todd Castagno goes to The District several times each week.
"It's been a lot of revitalization of the buildings and a lot of new business growth and opportunity, it seems like," he said.
A proposed expansion would include businesses just south of Elm Street, including Chipotle, Campus Bar and Grill, Cold Stone Creamery, and The Upper Crust. The expansion also includes the Orr Street studios to be built just north of Walnut Street.
A total of more than a dozen businesses see the benefits of having their names attached to The District.
"Giving it a big, brand-name kind of will draw more people down, kind of cluster it with businesses that are already popular and doing well in Columbia," said The Upper Crust's general manager.
"You know, the more property owners and business owners we have working together here in the central city, the stronger our economy becomes," added Carrie Gartner, Special Business District director. "As Columbia grows, it's not just important for the businesses, but for the neighborhoods as well, to work together to keep this area strong."
The city council will hold public hearings before voting on the proposed expansion. If the council approves it, each additional business would pay another $3,700 in taxes to The District.
