Columbia Facing Budget Cuts
COLUMBIA - City manager Bill Watkins has until Wednesday morning to submit his budget report, hoping to control the city's $3 million budget deficit.
One city fire official said he received an email saying the department could lose some jobs. No one will be laid off, but the city does not have the money to fill eight job vacancies. Four of the positions were vacated by retiring officers, the other four were new jobs city council had approved.
In addition to job cuts, Fire Station 2 on Worley Street may have to shut down one of their two fire trucks.
