Columbia Heroes Honored
COLUMBIA - Seven local Columbia individuals and groups received hero awards Tuesday afternoon for volunteer work in the community. A total of 36 people were nominated for the awards in seven different volunteer categories. All nominated individuals were recognized at the reception at Stoney Creek Inn in Columbia.
More than 200 people attended the tenth annual event which was started in 2002 by the Voluntary Action Center. Richard Gray won the award in the "Outstanding Volunteer in Community Protection" category.
"It's a wonderful city and you have many non-profit volunteer organizations as you saw at this ceremony," Gray said.
Each of the seven winners received $400 for their not-for-profit organization. Seven independent judges decided on the awards and each judge spoke to the audience about the accomplishments of five or six nominees.
