Columbia Installs Energy Efficient Lights in Garages
COLUMBIA - The City of Columbia started to install energy-efficient lights in two city garages on Monday morning. The two projects are the city's last two big projects funded through a $1 million federal grant.
Barbara Buffaloe, the city sustainability manager, said the new lighting will save the city an estimated $27,000 every year.
Columbia received the federal grants from the Department of Energy in 2009 to make energy improvements over the next three years. The grant runs out at the end of 2012.
The lighting projects are also the showcase projects for the city joining the national Better Buildings Challenge, which requires the city to reduce 20 percent of energy intensity by 2020.
