COLUMBIA - The Columbia man who admitted to setting a house on fire that he lived in, was due to appear in Boone County court Monday. Court documents released Monday reveal new details about what police said happened.
Columbia Police arrested Aimable Ruganzu, 26, for arson August 8 in connection to a fire at 2701 McClure Drive that happened in July. An extensive investigation by the Columbia Fire Department revealed the residence had been set on fire with a flammable liquid. Ruganzu admitted to drinking alcohol and setting the house on fire with a flammable liquid and a lighter.
The probable cause statement stated Ruganzu's mother was asleep in the home at the time of the fire and was able to escape through a bedroom window unharmed. Prosecutors charged Ruganza with arson Friday and he said he did not intend to hurt anyone.
The fire caused over $75,000 in damage.
