COLUMBIA - Mayor Bob McDavid will issue a proclamation at 5 p.m. Wednesday, designating May 9th as Children's Mental Health Day in Columbia.
The signing ceremony will be held at the Gordon Shelter of Stephen's Lake Park.
Burrell Behavioral Health says Children's Mental Health Day is a time when, "parents, children, professionals and child advocates collaborate in the planning of events to highlight the mental needs of children and youths across the nation."
According to the Missouri's Division of Comprehensive Psychiatric Services,"As many as one in five Missouri children may have an emotional or behavior disorder." Yet, "Only one in five children with a mental illness actually received needed services."
Many symptoms of adult mental illness appear before turning 20 years old.
