COLUMBIA - A Columbia motel, where police found a 16-year-old girl dead Thursday morning, told KOMU 8 News Monday afternoon that the motel will close May 1.

A news release from the Providence Inn and Suites Motel stated it invested a large sum of money in 2009 "to bring it to a level of quality to compete in the budget segment of the motel market."

The motel's release stated that because of the age of the property, it was still "not enough to compete," so the owners decided to close the motel after "continued losses."

This announcement came less than a week after Columbia Police Sgt. Joe Bernhard confirmed Morgan Myers, a reported runaway, was found dead in one of the rooms.

Police said an unidentified man called 911 telling operators he found the girl in his room and then hung up.

Investigators are treating her death as a homicide but have not released an official cause of death.

The motel stands at the corner of Providence Road and Vandiver Drive.
