COLUMBIA - With college students moving out of their apartments, Columbia streets and sidewalks are piled with trash and used furniture.

Columbia placed dumpsters east of the University of Missouri, but they have been overflowing daily. Couches, tables and mattresses people no longer want block sidewalks on some streets.

Some permanent residents said they are annoyed at the wastefulness they have been seeing.

"Instead of donating it, a lot of people are just a little bit lazy to take it over to your Salvation Army or Goodwill," Jian Qu said.

The Salvation Army and Goodwill urge people to donate things they do not want. Goodwill does not accept mattresses or box springs.

Columbia's city ordinance states, "A special pickup fee will be charged for trash and recycling placed curbside prior to 4 p.m. on the day before the normal collection day." It is a fee, billed to resident's monthly utility bill, of fifty dollars for every offense.

You must arrange a pickup time at least 48 hours in advance if  you have over-sized items like furniture or carpet. You can call Columbia Solid Waste or fill out an online request form

The city also picks up appliances for an extra fee and asks residents to have the item curbside by 7:30 a.m.
