Columbia Public Schools may become more breastfeeding friendly
COLUMBIA - The Columbia City Council will vote Monday on a memorandum allowing Columbia Public Schools to take steps towards becoming a Missouri Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite.
Workplaces that are designated as a "Missouri Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite" have guaranteed private spaces for mothers to pump milk, safe places to store milk, and more work flexibility for mothers when necessary.
La Leche League leader Kelly Smith said any step towards supporting mothers in the workplace is progress.
"One of the most difficult things about being a mom in that first year is finding a place to pump milk if you work," Smith said.
The University of Missouri became a "Missouri Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite" a few years ago.
"We've heard from a lot of moms that the change at the University of Missouri has been positive," she said. "I'm sure we'll hear the same thing about Columbia Public Schools if this memorandum passes."
Smith said she considers the city of Columbia to be fairly "breastfeeding friendly" in general.
