COLUMBIA - Home sales in Columbia for this year have already beat 2011's sales total, according to statistics compiled by the Columbia Board of REALTORS.

The total number of sales for January through October of this year was 1,629, surpassing the 2011 total of 1,514 sales. For the first time in six years, the board has achieved a year to date sales increase, excluding November and December sales.

The board said there was lower demand in 2011 from first time buyers, as Homebuyer Tax Credits from previous years were not intact. The board also said buyers were waiting for Columbia Public Schools to reach a final decision on district boundaries.

The board said this is the best October since 2009, when special tax incentives were enacted to spur home sales.

117 houses were sold in Columbia in October of this year. This year's sales have also beat 2010's sales and are 115 houses short of 2008's totals and 79 short of 2009's totals.
