Columbia's Central Pantry Needs Help
COLUMBIA - The Central Pantry needs volunteers to help cope with a busy upcoming few days.
The first of the month is always a hectic time, but August brings its own challenges.
Communications Coordinator at The Food Bank, Scott Gordon, said with people moving into new homes, visits to the food pantry rise.
He said this is caused by added costs like security deposits and utility bills. It is a pattern pantry staff sees every year.
Gordon says volunteers are needed to stock shelves and perform other duties around the pantry.
"When you depend on volunteers, there is always the question of if you'll have enough," he said.
Gordon also said pantry workers try to prepare the best they can.
"Our normal staff at the food pantry here is excellent, but we're going to need extra help because they will be overwhelmed," he said.
If you are interested in volunteering at the Central Pantry on Thursday or Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., visit their website for more information. Both individuals and groups are encouraged to volunteer.
