Columbia's First Street Mural Painted
COLUMBIA - Dozens of volunteers painted Columbia's first street mural today on a neighborhood bike boulevard where bikers and motorists can safely share the road.
An anonymous donor gave the Pednet Coalition and GetAbout Columbia $2,500 for the project.
An artist designed the mural and volunteers helped paint the pavement at the intersection of E. Ash and St. Joseph Streets. That intersection will remained closed tomorrow between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. as volunteers finish the painting.
Lindsay Akens, a volunteer, says the mural adds culture to the community. "It supports the arts and people who want to bring awareness to things such as bike safety. And more importantly, just bringing the community together," Akens said. A second mural will be painted next weekend at the intersection of Windsor and Melbourne Streets.
