COLUMBIA - The Columbia Board of Education voted Monday night to approve ballot language on collective bargaining measure for teachers in the Columbia school district.

In 2007, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that teachers and other public employees had the right to engage in collective bargaining agreements with their employers.

Last winter the board approved a policy allowing for teachers to choose their representation, and made the Columbia Missouri National Education Association the sole representative.

Susan McClinton, Columbia Missouri National Education Association President says her organization has been adamant that the school district create a policy.

"We have research that shows school districts do better and are more successful and their PR is better because their employees are happiest," says McClinton.

Following Monday night's board approval, teachers in the Columbia district will have the chance to vote on the measure on October 11.
