COLUMBIA - City volunteers collected household hazardous waste items Saturday morning. The Columbia Public Works Department hosts hazardous waste collections from 8 a.m. till noon every first and third Saturday of the month. The season runs from April through November and is located at 1313 Lakeview Ave in Columbia.

In an effort to keep dangerous materials out of the landfill, Columbia Public Works employees encourage residents to bring flammable, combustible, explosive, reactive, corrosive or toxic materials to the drop off.

Today the University of Missouri women's basketball team helped organize visitors based on what type of hazardous waste they were dropping off.

Volunteers ask residents to remain in their vehicles, leave their pets at home, and make sure all materials are in a safe container when they arrive at the collection facility.

Hazardous waste materials include acids, aerosol cans, paints, fertilizers, gasoline, ink, medications, pesticides and much more.
