Columbia Teens Help Rebuild Joplin
JOPLIN - A crew of teens from Columbia's Forum Boulevard Christian Church spent a day helping tear down demolished parts of some Joplin homes.
The crew of boys woke up at 7 a.m. and worked till 6 p.m. to tear the roof off of Nathan Powell's home. The roof was so badly damaged in the storm it had to be torn down before Powell could start renovating the first floor of the house.
"The roof has been completely destroyed, so what we're trying to do is strip it of all the bad wood, pretty much the entire roof, so that it can be framed as soon as possible, and the family can get back in it as soon as they can," said Justin Keith the group's orginizer.
Each of the boys had a reason for helping out.
"You can just imagine your home, and it's shattered," said Jacob Muchow, a volunteer, who said coming to Joplin helped him to understand what it would be like if a tornado as destructive as Joplin were to come through Columbia.
