VIENNA - A roof leak led a gym to collapse and left a high school without a place to call home. Now, the Vienna Eagles have a brand new gym after overwhelming support from the local community.
Maries County R-1 held a dedication Friday night before the school's homecoming, varsity basketball game. The sold-out crowd overflowed into the hallways for the dedication and ribbon cutting.
In all, about $63,000 was dedicated to help fund the project. Last fall, New Dawn Technologies, based out of Logan, Utah, donated a $10,000 grant to fix the gym. That was followed by two matching checks for $10,000 from a local trust and the Maries County Bank. Then, the St. James Walmart Distribution Center donated a $15,000 check in Safe Miles funds.
It's not the first game the Eagles have played in the new gym, but school officials wanted to wait until the homecoming game to make it extra special.
Connor Backues and Miranda Peterman won homecoming king and queen honors respectively. Vienna defeated Bourbon 59-42.
