Company to eliminate 275 jobs in Kirksville
KIRKSVILLE (AP) - Kraft Foods/Oscar Mayer said it plans to end bacon production at its Kirksville plant, eliminating 275 jobs.
The company informed employees Wednesday that the changes will be complete by the end of next year. In a memo, company officials said ham production will continue at the Kirksville plant.
The Kirksville Daily Express reported bacon production is being moved to Coshocton, Ohio, which already produces about two-thirds of the company's bacon product. Kirksville was the only other plant producing bacon for the company.
Spokeswoman Joyce Hodel said Kraft is considering bringing other production lines to Kirksville but nothing specific has been decided. She says the company won't decide until January which employees' jobs will be cut. Those employees will be offered a severance package.
