NEW MELLE, Mo. (AP) - The owner of an eastern Missouri gun shop has filed suit over a city's requirement of a special use permit for concealed carry classes.
The New Melle Gun Shop in the St. Charles County town of that name has been offering classes since the fall of 2011 in a building behind the shop near a baseball field.
Residents raised safety concerns after learning that trainees fired a minimum of 70 rounds during the classes. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that earlier this year, the city told the shop to seek a special use permit. Owner Mark Lamartina Jr. refused and the city ordered classes to stop.
Lamartina filed suit Friday in federal court, claiming the city had denied him due process and that his business has been harmed.
