Concordia couple celebrates their lasting love
CONCORDIA - Members of the community gathered at Lutheran Good Shepard Home to celebrate the 70th wedding anniversary of a couple they have practically known just as long.
Alvin and Selma Oetting have deep roots in the area, so it was no surprise to see the community in attendance at their chapel reception.
"I don't think there is a soul in this place that doesn't know either Selma or myself," Alvin said. "Everybody knows us. Part of it is, I have worked here. I have done maintenance here. I'm a resident here and so forth."
Alvin has had some time for his popularity to grow, he was a member to a men's organization in 1960 that helped to develop the nursing home they now live in.
Selma said she was very pleased to visit with old friends and reminisce during the celebratory evening.
"It's unbelievable. We can't believe that we are this age and that we've made it seventy years of our lives together. We are very happy," Selma said. "We've had good years. We worked hard, we didn't have a lot of money but we helped each other and our family."
The secret to lasting love? According to the happy couple, the answer is faith.
