Confirmed mumps cases rises to seven, more under investigation
COLUMBIA - The Columbia/Boone County Health Department said Thursday one additional case of mumps among MU students has been confirmed and three additional cases are being investigated.
The University of Missouri issued a health alert July 22, warning students and community members of the outbreak. As of Thursday, the Health Department had confirmed seven total cases of mumps, one probable case and had seven have sent to a lab to be tested. Waner said she expects more cases to be sent away for testing in the coming days.
The Columbia/Boone County Health Department spokesperson Andrea Waner said all confirmed cases involve University of Missouri students.
Most mumps cases do not lead to serious complications. Symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, earache and swelling under the jaw near the ear. Anyone experiencing symptoms is encouraged to contact their medical provider immediately.
