Authorities responded to a call to Crab Orchard Road between State Highway U and Highway 87 in Cooper County just before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Cooper County Sheriff Jerry Wolfe said deputies and the State Highway Patrol found the body of an African American female between the age of 35 and 40.

Wolfe did not disclose much information regarding the homicide.

He did say, however, that investigators believe the murder may have Columbia ties.

"Well at this point I am not prepared to say what the manner of death was," Wolfe said. "It was obviously a homicide. We have reason to believe that it may lead back into the Columbia area."

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow and the department said it will give progress updates on its Facebook page.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the individual is urged to contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Crime Control at 573-751-1000 or contact the Cooper County Sheriff's Department a 660-882-2771.

KOMU 8 News will have more information when it is made available.
