COLUMBIA -- The Cougar Softball team swept visiting Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University on Monday afternoon, posting a 9-0 five inning shutout in game one and a 6-1 victory in game two. Columbia improves to 11-12 overall on the season and 6-0 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) with the two wins.

Junior Whitni Howell got things started for the Cougars with an infield single to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Howell would advance to second on a sacrifice by Maria Imhoff and come around to score on a single to center by Chelsie Crain to give Columbia a 1-0 lead. Columbia would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the third as Jamie Holmes sent the first pitch of the inning over the right-center wall for her second home run of the year. Marli Hayes followed with a one-out single and came around to score on a triple to right by Taylor Atwood. Howell added an RBI groundout to bring home Atwood for a 4-0 advantage after three innings of play. The Cougars plated five more runs in the fourth and starting pitcher Taylor Richter worked a perfect fifth to complete the 9-0 shutout victory.

Richter picked up her sixth win of the season and second straight shutout, allowing just one hit over five innings. Columbia finished the contest with 10 hits, led by Holmes, Hayes, and Crain with two apiece. Holmes and Kristin Eiken each drove in a pair of runs as well.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game two as Holmes delivered a two-out triple to left center that scored Imhoff and Crain. Columbia scored a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth frames as Crain and Howell each homered to center to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead at the end of five innings. The Trojans were able to get on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would complete the scoring as Columbia secured the 6-1 win.

Freshman Amber Boehme earned her fourth victory of the year in the circle for the Cougars, allowing one run on two hits in 5.2 innings before giving way to Tiffany Urwiler who finished out the remainder of the contest. Holmes led the Columbia offense with three hits and three RBI in the win, while Crain added two hits and two runs scored.

The Cougars will host Missouri Baptist University on Wednesday, April 10th in an AMC doubleheader matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Antimi Black Field.
