Cougar Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Ranked Squad
CLEVELAND, TN. - The Columbia Cougar volleyball team dropped their first match of the season this morning, falling to top ranked and defending National Champion the University of Texas at Brownsville 3-0. The Cougars, ranked No. 3 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, drop to 6-1 on the season.
The Cougars and Scorpions played a close match, 25-22, 28-26 and 25-18. Columbia pulled away a few times in the first two sets to take two and three point leads but the Scorpions never gave up and were able to recover to sweep the match. Texas at Brownsville blocked their way to victory, posting 13 team blocks to Columbia's two. The blocks forced hitting errors for the Cougars who had 25 miscues.
Columbia's Kahoriz Feliz led the match with 11 kills. Brooke Simpson was close behind with eight kills and Trinity Ojo and Carol Berger each logged seven kills. Elena Berroteran had nine digs while Paula Ferreira had a match high 10 digs and dished out 32 assists.
The Cougars return to the court on Monday, September 10th for their 2012 home and conference opener. Columbia will face Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) University at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena of Southwell Complex and put their regular season conference win streak of 138 matches on the line.
