Cougars Beat Park to Open Conference Play
COLUMBIA -- The Columbia College men's basketball team started American Midwest Conference play Thursday night with a bang, defeating Park University by a final score of 76-59 in the Arena of Southwell Complex. The Cougars move to 14-5 on the season and are 1-0 in conference play. The Park Pirates drop to 7-10 overall and 1-2 against AMC opponents.
The Cougars rolled to a 40-27 halftime lead after shooting 58 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc. Columbia held the Pirates to just nine field goals and forced them into seven turnovers, resulting in 14 Cougar points.
Columbia held onto the lead for the remainder of the contest, pushing it to 22 close to the end of the game. The Cougars held only a slight, 30-29, advantage on the boards but made up for it on the defensive end and from beyond the arc where they accumulated 21 points compared to the Pirates 12.
Hal Payne led the Cougars to the win with 16 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Dressler and Devin Griffin also finished in double figures with 14 points apiece. Reco Anderson had 14 points to lead the Pirates.
The Cougars are idle until next Thursday, January 19th when they host William Woods University in AMC action. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 P.M. in the Arena of Southwell Complex.
