Cougars Come Up Short On Final Day at Gulf Shores
GULF SHORES, AL - In their second meeting with LSU-Alexandria (La.) on the young season, the Columbia Cougar softball team fell to the Generals 4-3 Sunday as they wrapped up play in the Gulf Shores Invitational. The loss drops Columbia to 5-4 on the year.
Jamie Holmes doubled to lead off the home half of the first inning and would come around to score on a two-out double by Taylor Atwood to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. LSU evened the score with a run in the top of the third, but Columbia answered with a home run by Holmes in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead, 2-1.
The Generals again responded with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to grab a 4-2 lead against Cougars starter Amber Boehme. Following a leadoff triple by Holmes to start the bottom of the fifth, Columbia cut the LSU lead to 4-3 on an RBI single by Kristin Eiken. The Cougars got the tying run to third base in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to cash in as Chelsie Crain grounded out to end the game.
Holmes finished just a single short of the cycle, going 3 for 3 on the day and scoring all three Columbia runs. Eiken and Marli Hayes also had two hits for the Cougars. Boehme took the loss in the circle for Columbia, giving up four runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Freshman Tiffany Urwiler gave up just one hit over the final 2.2 innings, while striking out three and walking two.
The Cougars are scheduled to host preseason #14 Williams Baptist (Ark.) College on Wednesday, March 13th in their American Midwest Conference (AMC) opener. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., followed by game two at 3:00 p.m.
