Cougars Finish Classic Undefeated
COLUMBIA - The Columbia College Cougar volleyball team swept through the competition for the second straight day to go 4-0 at the Columbia College Classic this weekend. The Cougars posted 3-0 victories over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College and Bethel (Tenn.) University. With the wins Columbia, ranked third in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, is 4-0 on the season.
Against the 20th ranked Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson, Columbia won by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-18. Kahoriz Feliz and Carol Berger logged 10 kills apiece in the win. Setter Paula Ferreira dished out 40 assists and Elena Berroteran had 13 digs.
The Cougars took care of business in quick fashion against the Wildcats of Bethel, winning by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-17. Brooke Simpson led charge in this match with a match high 14 kills. Ferreira knocked down six kills and had nine digs while passing out 34 assists. Berroteran had 26 digs while Aleah Hayes picked up 13 digs.
Following the game an all-classic team was named. Members of the all-classic team include; Magda Santos from Wiley College, Kristi Hager from Lindsey Wilson College, Alicia Gosney, Arielle Walters and Dana Johnston from Grace College, Pamela Lima, Patricia Souza and Lauren Purdy from Park University, Sashalee Wallen from Bethel University and Kahoriz Feliz, Elena Berroteran and Brooke Simpson for Columbia. Paula Ferreira was named the Most Valuable Player.
The Cougars are idle until next weekend when they face top nationally ranked competition. On Friday, September 7th they open up play at the Lee (Tenn.) University showcase. They take on Indiana Tech at 9:15 a.m. and then play third ranked Lee University at 1:45 p.m. On Saturday, September 8th the Cougars will face No. 1 ranked University of Texas at Brownsville in a 10:00 a.m. start time.
