Cougars Volleyball Team Picks Up Two Wins This Weekend
BATESVILLE - The Columbia Cougars swept Freed-Hardeman University and Lyon College Saturday, pushing the team to 22-2 on the season.
The Cougars defeated Freed-Hardeman 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20 before sweeping Lyon College 25-15, 25-12 and 25-18. Against the Freed-Hardeman Lions, Vesna Trivunovic pounded down 15 kills proceeded by Kelly Corkum's seven kills. Aleah Hayes had 15 digs and Paula Ferreira cranked out 36 assists.
Trinity Ojo led the Cougars against the Lyon College Scots with 11 kills. Ferreira came in close second with 26 assists and six kills.
With the Cougars win over Freed-Hardeman, head coach Melinda Wrye-Washington becomes Columbia's all-time wins leader in volleyball. With 458 wins to date at Columbia, Wrye-Washington surpasses former coaches Susan & Wayne Kreklow who held a record of 456-86 in their 10 year careers coaching the Cougars.
Since 2000, Wrye-Washington has put together a 458-57 record and has led the volleyball team to eight top five finishes at the NAIA National Championships, including being crowned champions in 2001. This accomplishment places Wrye-Washington with the rest of the Cougar coaching staff who are also all-time wins leaders in their sport at Columbia College.
The Cougars will next face Hannibal-LaGrange College in the American Midwest Conference.
