County Offers Free Flu Shots
COLUMBIA - The Columbia Boone County Public Health Department said Wednesday it is still offering free flu shot vaccinations to all children under the age of 18.
"It encourages them to get a flu vaccination for their children, because depending if you have multiple children, $25 at your physician, it can get into a lot of money," said Public Health Manager Mary Martin.
The health department is also hosting off-site clinics at local Columbia elementary schools. A $14,000 grant for the vaccinations and off-site clinics comes from the state.
"It was tied to an initiative, and this initiative was to improve immunization delivery in the state, " said Martin.
The off-site and on-site flu vaccinations come in two forms: a mist or injection. Filling out a signature form will give school officials permission to vaccinate the child. It also helps determine whether the child can get the mist or injection vaccination. This is not only a seasonal flu shot. The shot also includes the H1N1 vaccination.
"H1N1 is one of the three components in the flu vaccine this year," Martin said.
