Couple Accused Of Locking Kids Out Of House
BENTON, Mo. (AP) -- A southeastern Missouri couple is free on bond after being accused of repeatedly locking their children out of the house for hours each day without adequate food or water.
The Southeast Missourian reports that Scott County prosecutors charged 36-year-old Kevin Sparks and 40-year-old Melissa Sparks of Scott City each with 10 counts of first-degree child endangerment.
Melissa Sparks also is charged with two counts of child abuse. Sheriff Rick Walter says the children, ages 13 and 10, were locked out at least 20 times since school summer break began, at times for six hours a day while their parents worked.
The children are now living with a relative. The Sparks do not have a listed home telephone number. Online court records do not show whether they have an attorney.
