CPD Releases Names of Men Killed in I-70 Accident
COLUMBIA - Columbia Police Department released the names of the two pedestrians killed on I-70 Thursday. Edward Taggart, 72, of Prarie Home, was transported from the scene near the 129.9 mile marker to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Gilbert L. Love, 73, of Auxvasse, was pronounced dead at the scene on I-70 E.
The two men had been next to two parked cars on the shoulder of the interstate attempting to put gas inside one of the vehicles when a black, 1998 Toyota 4-Runner veered into them. The driver, Earl William Hutcherson made statements to police referencing using a cell phone before the crash. CPD believes alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Hutcherson hit both pedestrians and the two cars they had parked alongside the interstate. He has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
