Crackdown on Illegal Immigration
Governor Matt Blunt ordered public safety officers to take extra steps today. The governor says he doesn't want the state to wait for Washington to act on this problem; so he's added the extra duties to the officers.
"We don't want what happened to the people in New Jersey to happen in Missouri." The Governor went on to talk about an illegal immigrant in New Jersey who went to prison for the rape of a child. After posting bail, the man murdered three college students. With hopes to prevent such a crime Blunt has ordered state law to look for illegal immigrants.
The new orders are for members of the water patrol, highway patrol and capitol police. They'll now run immigration and customs enforcement checks: otherwise known as "ice" checks. Any suspects found to be illegal immigrants will go to ice offices in Kansas City, St. Louis or Springfield. Police departments can run the checks online or get help from the Capitol.
"They can call MIAC, the Missouri Information Analysis Center, here in Jefferson City and they will do those checks for them." The new order for these background checks begins immediately. This is the second move Blunt has made regarding illegal immigrants in Missouri. Earlier this year, he ordered a review of employees at companies with state contracts after the discovery of illegal workers at a cleaning company.
