Crews Battle Massive Mulch Fire South of St. Louis
ARNOLD (AP) - Firefighters are looking for the cause of a massive mulch fire in an unincorporated area about 15 miles south of St. Louis.
KMOV-TV reports the fire started around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night at a rock quarry near Arnold. Crews were still on the scene at 5:30 a.m. Monday, and officials said it could be several more hours before the fire was out.
The fire was burning about a mile-and-a-half west of Interstate 55 in Jefferson County. Crews from the Rock Community Fire Department and several other departments were called in to battle flames.
Water had to be shuttled into the remote area to contain the fire. Officials said the blaze posed no threat to buildings or property.
