Deep Water Danger
Although improved storm sewers can handle most floodwaters, officials said flash floods can clog sewers for hours. When that happens, water rises and stalls vehicles.
"In the past, when you would have heavy downfalls of rain in a short period of time, especially at night or in the mornings when it was dark, people wouldn't realize the water was as deep as it was," said Public Works Director Tom Sanders. "They would drive in there and cars would be floating."
So far, only Moberly's Rollins Street underpass has warning signs because of its heavy traffic, but officials said they'll post signs soon at other underpasses.
