Democrat Joyce re-elected Cole County judge
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - Democratic Cole County Circuit Judge Pat Joyce will keep her position despite efforts by out-of-state Republican donors to unseat her.
Voters re-elected Joyce Tuesday after an unusually costly local judicial campaign by Republican opponent Brian Stumpe.
The Washington-based Republican State Leadership Committee donated $100,000 directly to Stumpe weeks before the election.
The group also gave almost $300,000 to its local political action committee to pay for negative advertisements against Joyce.
Local judicial elections typically don't gain statewide attention or out-of-state donors.
But Joyce is the only Democratic judge in a court that hears cases on the constitutionality of Missouri laws and wording on statewide ballot initiatives.
