Deputies on Leave for Shooting Eugene Man
Two deputies were checking a suspicious vehicle near Chepley and U.S. Highway 63 when, they said, Jeffrey Mesecher of Eugene got out of the car, waved a firearm at them, and shot at them. They fired back and hit Mesecher in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators don't know what caused the incident or even why the victim was in Jacksonville, a small town near Moberly. Residents were shocked that a fatal shooting could happen in their community.
"The Randolph County sheriff has placed both deputies on administrative leave which is standard protocol for law enforcement officers when they're involved in a critical incident similar to this," said Sgt. Brent Bernhardt of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control is leading the investigation.
